The PETER YOUNG, VK3MV, IARU YOUTH EXCELLENCE AWARD

Peter Young worked for 59 years of his professional career in the radiocommunications field and he only retired after 21 years
with the Australian Spectrum Regulator as a Regional Manager for Southern Australia.
Peter was asked by the Wireless Institute of Australia President, Michael Owen – VK3KI (sk) to assist the organisation in working
through issues associated with the 2005 Review of the Amateur Service.

The 2005 review saw the introduction of a three-tier category licensing for amateurs in Australia, including the Foundation Licence.

At this time, Peter felt that amateur radio gave him a great career and it was time to give something back amateur radio.

As a valued volunteer, he has performed the following roles and initiatives in the domestic and international arena:

 In 2006 was elected to the Board of the Wireless Institute of Australia until 2012;

  Was the Intruder Watch Coordinator from September 2008 to June 2021;

  In 2012 he stepped down as a WIA Director, but continued as the WIA Regulatory Counsel – a role he provided until just recently; and
  In 2008 was awarded the Jonathan Livingston Award by the Australian Radio Communications Industry Association (ARCIA) in recognition of
     his personal achievement and excellence in the Radiocommunication industry.

Peterâ€Ös involvement, contributions and expertise have been also reflected within the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU),
where he performed the following roles:

  Was elected as a Region 3 Director at the Bali Conference in 2015.

  Served a one-year term on the IARUâ€Ös Administrative Council.

  IARU Region 3 Monitoring System Coordinator from September 2011 to June 2014;

 - Development of the IARU Region 3 Monitoring System Guidelines;

Peter has also attended Region 3 Conferences either as a WIA Observer, Delegate and/or IARU Activities Coordinator.

Peter VK3MV was recently awarded honorary life membership of the WIA.

The naming of this prestigious international award recognises his hard work over many years and he has been recognised in such an
ongoing and beneficial way.

Congratulations Peter VK3MV and a heartfelt thank you from the Board and the members of the WIA
