Silent Key
Kay Denton

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Kay Denton.

Kay passed away peacefully, on Thursday the 25th of September 2025, surrounded by family, after an all too short remission. Although not an amateur radio operator, Kay was the partner of Peter VK7KPC.

Peter and Kay had recently moved back to South Australia, after being in Tasmania for nearly twenty years. The stay in Tasmania was originally only meant to be a temporary work transfer for Peter. They liked Tasmania so much they decided to stay and lived in Evandale.

Kay has been a long time member of NTARC and joined along with Peter soon after they arrived. You may not have ever heard Kay on air but everyone who has ever been to an NTARC social event or club morning coffee would recognise the voice, as she was always part of the dedicated few assisting and cooking behind the scenes.

Whenever Jota/Joti came around you always knew that after the long day, and all the participants had departed, the volunteers would be in for Kayâ€Ös phenomenal Tuna Mornay treat for tea, hopefully followed by Jelly cake for dessert. This was of course after we had been sustained during the day with scones and sausage rolls. Then there was Kay and Peterâ€Ös “special” fruit cake recipe that came out whenever club members were assisting at Equine Endurance Rides which was always eagerly devoured, HI-HI.

On behalf of NTARC, the Committee wish to pass on our condolences to Peter and family including Bijou their little dog. You will be greatly missed by all.

Vale Kay (SK).

WWFF, SOTA, POTA and IOTA
Weekly Wrap-Up

Plenty of radio action around VK7 this past week, with activators out in the parks, on the peaks and working the bands for WWFF, POTA and SOTA.

Travis, VK7VXT, and Jim, VK7JZ, headed to ANZAC Park in Lindisfarne for an activation. They operated on both the 15m and 40m bands and successfully logged 11 contacts, which qualified the park for its first recorded activation.

Rodney, VK7HAM, Al, VK7AN and Peter, VK7ZPE, were active from the summit of Bonner Hill, located south of Scottsdale, on Wednesday. The hill rises to 643 meters and is covered with dense vegetation, with only limited access available to reach the activation zone. Despite the challenging terrain, the team successfully set up and operated on the 40m band. Al and Rodney were first to activate the summit back in November 2022.

NWCRRA News
VK7RWC out of isolation with a restored link to VK7

The North West Coast Radio Repeater Association has linked the West Coast's main repeater to the Allstar VoIP network. VK7RWC on Mount Read near Rosebery, joined the NWCRRA ASL3 hub in Burnie with node number 1732. Association president Dion VK7DB upgraded the repeater and installed the temporary 4G router over two recent days of wild west coast weather. Dion battled extreme conditions on the summit with deep snow and driving sleet obscuring the hut that houses commercial radio stations and VK7RWC.

The Repeater's internet link was patched through the association's VPN which bypasses the need for it to have its own static IP address. Plans are already underway to harden the internet link with a fiber optic cable and a permanent IP. Formerly isolated West Coast amateurs have already been making contacts all over the North West Coast and RHT in Hobart via the AllStar portal. Once again, the association has combined technical expertise and adventurous mountain climbing bravery to provide continuous communication from Rosebery right up to the North West Coast, with repeaters; RAC, RWC, RVP and the Mt Balfour CB repeater.

Upcoming NWCRRA projects include an upgrade to the solar power array on the shack at Mount Balfour, thanks to a generous donation by a North West 4 by 4 club. The antennas on the Table Cape repeater VK7RAC are being upgraded and the St Valentines Peak repeater VK7RVP will once again host the North West Coast Car Club's repeaters for the Australasian Rally Championships in November.

Right across the state, amateur radio operators are connected by the efforts of the NWCRRA, so keep your rigs turned on and tuned in for more updates from the North West Coast Radio Repeater Association.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

Last Wednesday night Geri VK2UTE dropped into the NTARC club rooms to say hello. But he ended up staying to watch the live REAST YouTube stream presentation on “How to use the RSGB calculator”. Following the presentation we partook of drinks, food and general calculator implementation chatter around the table. It was great to see you again, we hope you enjoy your last week back in Hobart. With a bit of luck we will see or hear you next trip over.

The clubâ€Ös last technical night was a hands on follow up of the previous weekâ€Ös REAST streamed presentation on the Vector Network Analyser. Itâ€Ös amazing how prevalent these little units have become amongst the amateur fraternity over the last few years, almost as common as a multi-meter. The night got off to a surprise start with the arrival of Brenton VK7HP, who decided to travel down from the North West coast for the VNA evening. He also brought an assortment of antenna related items he had been designing and constructing recently.

He had made a stand-alone 1296 MHz band modular antenna assembly that could be used individually or on a multi arrays. The dual driven radiating elements are constructed using 2 by 9 mm flat copper strapping bent into the classic bow-tie shape. Each radiating element is mounted on a double split quarter wave balun which also incorporates a feed rod which was machined to different diameters providing multi stage impedance matching. The module is interconnected using a QMA RF connector mounted directly on the rear. All this came with pages of calculations and detailed construction details for us to peruse.

For testing on the VNAs we used the version with the single module mounted on a screen back reflector and incorporating a single director element. This was so recently constructed that evidently the paint had only finished drying during the trip over to the club rooms. This little antenna setup demonstrated the various VNA capabilities. It also proved to be very useful demonstrating, in real time, the proximity effect from objects on impedance and Smith chart plots.

Brenton also had a very impressive screen backed quad bay version using these dual driven element assemblies. All this was hand made with the possible exception of the Bunnings, very rigid, wire mesh shelf which was repurposed as an excellent screen backing. Mounted on the rear of the meshing was a four port power divider interconnected to each antenna module with a QMA patch lead. An N type connector was used for the main RF input. The quad power dividers were also made from scratch using copper tubing and rods plus some machined brass blocks. The whole assembly had the feel and looks of a commercial product.

For those interested, QMA connectors are “quick-connect” RF connectors and a variation on the conventional SMA while maintaining the same electrical properties. They are similar to the operation to the pneumatic quick connect air couplers. There is a simple push-and-lock mechanism that secures the connection and you simply pull-back the collar for disconnection, as opposed to a screw thread collar on the conventional SMA. These were used instead of standard SMA connectors because they were extremely cost effective, read that as free, Hi-Hi. Brenton had as many as he wanted simply by de-soldering them from a pile of discarded printed circuit boards. Plus they also came with a heap of recovered suitable short patch leads, a no brainer when it comes to recycling. QMA connectors have been available since 2003 and were extensively used in mobile phone base station equipment over the years. Just for interest N Type connectors are also available as a QN version, for quick release.

The night ended up being a fun, interesting hands on VNA night as well as an excellent show and tell from Brenton.

Mug Order - yes, we are talking about the white mugs for drinking out of, those that have our club logo on one side, personalised with your name and call sign on the other. We are placing another order so if you would like one then please email secretary@ntarc.net to place an order. Please specify what name is to be printed above the call sign. The final price will be about $12 depending on eventual quantity ordered.

JOTA - WE NEED YOU

JOTA/JOTI is an annual event that encourages Scouts to get on the air using Amateur Radio and IRC to communicate with other Scouts worldwide.

It is also an excellent opportunity to inspire the next generations of Amateur Radio operators to take up our hobby.

Randall VK7VWK is running an event at the REAST club rooms on the Domain on Saturday Afternoon on the 18th of October 2025.

Timeframe will be sometime between 12:00 and 18:00, depending on the availability of both radio operators and scouts.

I need licensed operators who can operate the club station. Alternatively, you can bring your own gear. If anyone has any specific setups for CW or a foxhunt, that would be great.

You donâ€Öt need to be there the whole afternoon. If you can only make it for an hour or two, I would be most grateful.

If you can help, please contact me at vk7vwk(at)gmail.com.

73, Randall Treloyn, VK7VWK

[Ed] Please note that anyone coming along to help will need to have a Working with Vulnerable People card. Please take a look at the link on the email addition of the broadcast. Get in quick as the card can take up to 4 weeks.

September Presentation Night
ElectroMagnetic Radiation (EMR) Assessments

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkA8iIm9-Io

Every Australian amateur radio operator now has a clear, practical pathway to ensure their station complies with Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) safety requirements.

Last Wednesday night saw a fascinating easy to follow presentation on the simple steps that any amateur radio operator can use to assess their station antennas to check if they meet the EMR safety requirements.

This comprehensive presentation is available on the REAST YouTube Channel along with all the documents you need to complete an assessment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkA8iIm9-Io

The session broke down why EMR safety matters: from legal compliance, to preparing for high-power scientific licences, to furthering your technical knowledge. We then walked through the entire EMR assessment process, backed by simplified tools like the WIA EMR Flowchart and Notes, RSGB EMR Calculator and station record-keeping spreadsheets.
