VKSpotter: Bringing Spots, Propagation and the Amateur Radio Community Together

Finding that interesting signal is one thing. Knowing where it is, how it got there and whether
anyone else is hearing it is another.
VKSpotter is an online amateur radio operating companion designed to bring live band activity,
location information, propagation clues, station directories and operator interaction together
in one place.
Its live spot board shows community reports containing information such as callsign, frequency,
mode, signal reports and propagation notes, with spots displayed either as a list or
geographically on a world map.
Operators can also filter activity by band and mode, which is rather more civilised than staring
at an endless stream of spots hoping something relevant eventually wanders past.
A particularly useful feature is the integration of location and propagation information.
VKSpotter can calculate approximate bearing and distance between stations using profile locations
and Maidenhead grid locators, helping operators determine where to point an antenna and understand
the geometry of a propagation path.
Its maps can incorporate tropospheric information together with day/night position, the Sun,
Maidenhead grids, amateur radio zones, DXCC entities, magnetic-equator information and other
propagation-related overlays.
These tools aren't intended to replace listening and operating experience, but to provide additional
information for interpreting what is happening on the bands.
VKSpotter also reaches beyond its own community spotting system.
DX Cluster activity can be incorporated into the operating view, allowing local reports to be
considered alongside spots from operators elsewhere.
Digital operators have access to a PSKReporter viewer, providing another way to see where signals
are actually being received and potentially revealing openings before they become obvious through
conventional spotting. For VHF and UHF operators there are also beacon and repeater directories,
including callsigns, locations, frequencies or channels, operational status and recent community reports.
The application adds a distinctly community-based dimension through its operator directory and band-based chat.
Operator profiles can provide callsign, grid, QTH and station activity, while users retain control
over which contact information is visible.
Band chat provides somewhere to discuss conditions, coordinate activity or simply ask whether
anybody else can hear that tantalisingly weak station.
Historical searching adds another useful dimension, allowing previous spots to be examined by time,
band, mode, propagation type, spotter, grid or DX station.
That can help operators recognise recurring openings and build a better understanding of local
and seasonal propagation rather than treating every opening as an isolated act of ionospheric generosity.
Ultimately, VKSpotter is built around shared amateur radio knowledge.
Every useful spot, beacon report, repeater update and observation helps build a better picture of
activity for everyone using the system.
