N1MM Logger+: Making WIA Contest Logging Easier

For anyone getting involved in contesting, keeping an accurate log can be almost as important as making the contacts themselves.
One of the most widely used solutions is N1MM Logger+, a free Windows-based contest logging program supporting CW,
phone and digital modes and designed specifically around the fast-paced requirements of contest operation.
N1MM Logger+ supports a huge range of international contests, but Australian operators also benefit from User Defined Contest
(UDC) files prepared and maintained by Alan Shannon VK4SN.
These files allow N1MM Logger+ to be configured for a growing number of Australian and New Zealand contests, including the
Australia Day Contest, Harry Angel Sprint, John Moyle Memorial Field Day, Remembrance Day Contest, VHF/UHF Field Days,
VK Shires and Trans-Tasman Contest.
The UDC files tell N1MM how a particular contest works, including its exchanges, scoring and other contest-specific requirements.
Alan's website also provides setup instructions, support files and, for some contests, Call History files that can automatically
populate exchange information when a callsign is entered.
The files are installed into the N1MM Logger+ UserDefinedContests folder and then appear alongside the program's built-in
contests when creating a new contest log.
Correct setup is important. Alan notes that operators should use the latest version of N1MM Logger+, follow any supplied
instructions and avoid modifying the supplied UDC files.
For some contests, additional country or support files are required for scoring to work correctly.
The Sent Exchange entered during contest setup is also important because that information is used when N1MM generates the
final Cabrillo log.
Once the contest is finished, N1MM Logger+ can export the log for submission.
Its contest logging facilities support the Cabrillo format, while ADIF and other export formats are also available for moving
contacts into general logging programs or other systems.
For supported WIA contests, this means an operator can move from logging the contact in N1MM, to producing the required
Cabrillo contest log, and then uploading that file to VK Log Checker for checking and submission.
It removes much of the manual work that once followed a contest and makes it much easier for operators to submit a properly
formatted log rather than allowing several hours of operating to disappear forever into a notebook on the shack desk.
VK Log Checker has become an important part of the Australian contesting ecosystem, providing a central location for submitting
logs and supporting the processing of a range of WIA contests.
