Queensland's Grassroots Approach to Emergency Communications

Date : 14 / 06 / 2026
Author : Gareth Davey VK4GED

While many Australian states coordinate emergency communications activities through formal WICEN organisations,
Queensland has developed a different model that achieves many of the same outcomes through a network of resilient
individual operators and community-focused amateur radio clubs.

More than 20 years ago, Queensland moved away from a statewide WICEN structure, instead fostering a culture where
radio amateurs take personal responsibility for preparedness.
In a state regularly impacted by cyclones, flooding and severe storms, many operators have equipped their stations
with backup power systems, spare radios and portable communications go-kits, ensuring they can continue operating
when conventional communications infrastructure is disrupted.

This grassroots approach is complemented by the strong involvement of amateur radio clubs across Queensland that
maintain an active emergency communications focus. Through regular meetings, training exercises and support for
community events, these clubs help members develop and maintain the practical skills needed during times of need.

Like their WICEN counterparts elsewhere in Australia, Queensland radio amateurs continue to demonstrate the value
of amateur radio as a community service, providing a pool of trained communicators ready to assist when required.
The VK4 Emergency Communications network also provides a focal point for information sharing and collaboration,
helping ensure that Queensland amateurs remain prepared, connected and ready to serve their communities when called upon.
