Agree for new questions.
But better reply to same category, where topic starter wrote Q.

You can run small node with s/w modem on RPi - its cheap and reliable,
there are few good Linux node software with net/rom.

I'm think time is come to give attention of most long time operators to write/renew
some brief suggestions and instructions about all packet operation!
As national organizations, regulators, most digital ham clubs - all lost interest
in coordination of packet systems for more then 10-15 years.

For last decade we faced with facts, that new packet users/operators about don't
have any actual sources for instructions! 
As results we see many mis-configured systems etc....
