Labor Day Holiday. We wish everyone a safe and
happy end of summer weekend.
Sorry I missed last week...I was so exhausted
from a 15 hour bus ride to/from the Huntsville
Hamfest, and all of the walking involved, that
I have been trying to catch up on sleep. If I
go next year, I'll either take the train or fly,
and try to not do as much walking. If you'd like

There were severe storms in Huntsville Thursday
night, and in Arkansas on Friday night and this
past Wednesday. But, moderate to high fire danger
and burn bans are widespread, along with the
potential of a flash drought and more extreme
heat. So much for meteorological autumn that
starts on Sep. 1.
I'll have to miss the oldest hamfest west of
the Mississippi River on Sep. 11-12 in Mena,
Arkansas, as I'll be at the National Weather
Service in North Little Rock with their Open
House, with Arkansas Skywarn. It will save me
some money, as I have to schedule several
medical appointments after Labor Day...once
again, I drained the bank account dry. But,
at least all my groceries are obtained for
the month.

A busy week. Been stripping wallpaper at the
YL's house. We've got it ready for paint now -
that starts tomorrow.
Went to the track yesterday and flagged for
the World Racing League. It was a good day.
Not too much mayhem - they behaved themselves!

It has been cool and wet here. Temps high
60s/low 70s - and a bit of rain every for
the past week.
Big news is I switched the node to a Raspberry
Pi. I know I had originally said I was waiting
until after tonight, but my testing last week
was going so well I didn't really see much
reason not to give it a go. It was easier than
I expected. The biggest challenge was learning
how to configure direwolf as my modem for HF.
I finally learned that it has dozens of options
for the industrious/curious - but for practical
operation, there's only a couple that you need!
Finished Hamword today in 5 guesses. Almost
thought I wasn't going to get it!

GE All on the net. Sounds like you had a good
hamfest, Daryl. Glad you were able to make it.
I always liked the Orlando hamfest when I was
in Florida. Big hamfests are great.
So, this morning I was in a training class. A
local ham club, the "West Valley Ham Shack"
has set up an ICOM 7300 for remote operation,
and is training us members on how to use it.
The class was two hours this morning, so over
the next few days, I will try to hop on and
see how well their 80/40 delta loop works. I
am hoping it will be better for a couple of
the local NTS nets than the long wire that I
have strung up around my eaves. I can hope
anyway (hi hi).
Still have not started HAMWORD this week, but
will try to think of a good starting word
tonight.
I am also looking forward to Wednesday night
this week ... we have a local Skywarn net, and
I finally got a weather station setup at home,
so I can give a proper report this week.
That's about it from Arizona. Still too hot
here to spend much time outdoors, but it
should be getting better in the mornings
over the next month.

Carl, I forgot to mention that I had an
eyeball QSO with both Charley, NT5R (I got
a photo of us), and Scott, K0WAV. That will
likely be all my hamfests until early next
year. One has to be always ready for emcomm,
and I need to get my setup with remotehams.com
(the free one) working again. The "Super El Nino"
could mean a busy fall and winter for my area...
the winter outlooks are already coming out...I
think I'm going to call Grover Groundhog or
Punxatawney Phil (hi hi).

Good evening Daryl and all on NET.
We have been seeing several wildfires starting up
within 15 miles of my QTH, they are out, but the
brief spats of rain haven't been enough to wet the
forests. The lightning that comes with the rain,
starts new ones. They are forecasting rain for the
next week, hope it will be enough to calm things
down. We are still getting temps in the 90's during
the day, and down to 50F at night. Lots of smoke
from the local fires and from the ones in NE
Washington. August was rough ...
Last week, we did a trip up to one of our local
repeater sites to update the firmware on the older
Kenwood unit and add a 100 Hz tone on the system.
We want to install a UHF link to another repeater
site, but we found the older Kenwood unit won't
support DTMF remote control.
I ordered a new Kenwood unit on Friday, hoping it
and all the other materials arrive before the snow
starts.
Band conditions continue to be a problem, so I
haven't been doing much radio play... Keeping
indoors out of the smoke, and just taking it
easy.

Rick, bummer on the fires...my FireGuard Android
app has been going nuts, like my lightning app
during storms. Bummer on the older rig not working
with the new technology. I haven't had a chance to
get back on remotehams.com (the free one) yet. It
was a fun weekend, but there had to be glitches. A
reminder that we are off next week for the holiday.
Thanks for being here, and glad the node is working
again, so we could get your comments.
