N5VLZ:

Arkansas had widespread heavy rain and flash
flooding last Thursday; several rivers are
above flood stage. We may have to worry about
winter weather in Arkansas later this month;
Punxatawey Phil may be right this year, even
though highs have been in the 70s and even
80s in Arkansas today. But, meteorological
spring doesn't start until March 1, and the
vernal equinox doesn't start until March 20;
it could be a chilly Valentines Day here.
Actually, the groundhog will ALWAYS see his
shadow, for all the TV camera lights, there
will be 6 more weeks of winter, then spring
will be around the corner. Rumor has it that
Phil's ex-wife, Phyllis, is now in Florida,
proclaiming that her ex-husband was just a
pathological liar...and he may do that to a
new girl friend, Felicia (hi hi).

My HDMI monitor failed (maybe it stood for
"How Display Malfunctioned Intensely) (hi hi),
but thankfully, the tower had an option for
the older VGA monitor connection. I found a
nice mini HDMI monitor on Amazon, and I had
a $10 gift card that paid for the VGA to USB
cable adapter. Both should arrive tomorrow,
and the BBS will go on to that system. I had
an extra VGA monitor and cable to swap out.
Also, the new laptop I ordered was virus free,
so I was up late installing stuff on it. It's
true that virus programs will consider their
competition as "malware", feeling "they are
clean, and everything else is infected". Now,
I have a laptop for test sessions, and for my
2025 train trips.

Speaking of which, I booked my final train
trip for 2025...round trip from Little Rock
to Albuerque for $284. Add the round trip
from Little Rock to Shreveport and Little
Rock to Wichita, that was $530 for just the
rail fare for 3 trips...I surely couldn't
get that one way via flying. I still have to
save up for funds for food and the hotels,
but have time to do that. They say "money
talks", but mine just waves "goodbye"
(hi hi).

Wednesday marks 18 years since I lost my Dad,
and I lost my XYL not 3 months later...hard
to believe it has been that long. One of the
trips is on the weekend of what would've been
my 22nd anniversary, and the other is on the
6th anniversary of my Mom's death. But, I've
got all the wonderful memories that no one
can take away...and I cherish all of them.

GE Bob (NY), how was your week?? >>>

NS2B:

GE All!

It was cold and snowy this week. Every time
I'd clear off the driveway and sidewalk,
it would snow again!

Finished the FLdigi class I was taking. It
was pretty good. Regarding the comment before
net about too many nets and not enough time.
At the end of the class, the instructor handed
out a listing of all the digital traffic nets
in our region - there are about 8 or 10 of
them - and I'm unavailable for any of them!
Sorta bummed me out. Hey, such is life.

Glad to hear your computers and travel plans
are coming together. BTU Daryl >>>

N5VLZ:

Bob, as noted, winter isn't over. FB on the
class, and agreed on too many nets. I'm glad
things are finally looking up for me.

GE Eric, how was your week?? >>>

WG3K:

GE all, glad to see my neighbor Bob joining in
tonight.

Except for a few piles here and there, I believe
all our snow has finally melted. I wouldn't mind
seeing one more storm before everything starts
blooming again. Still a bit chilly outside,
though.

Both of my kids' laptops failed in the exact
same way at almost the same time, last week,
so I need to follow up with support on that one.

Today is my amateur radio birthday. The FCC
bestowed upon me the callsign KF4OTN 28 years
ago. It has been a crazy ride so far.

Back to net. >>>

N5VLZ:

Eric, this is our spring thaw. Bummer on the
dual computer failure, and happy ham birthday.
I celebrate my 34th in August, and turn 65 in
March.

GE Bob (MD), how was your week?? >>>

KB3KOW:

Good evening all. Good as always :-)

Like you all, a few computer failures but the
one that hurt was my node - when it died, it
took the hard drive with it, but have all but
one up and running on a mini PC, so all good
there.

As to snow - my XYL tells me tonight to
expect some more in the near future, but with
the funny WX patterns here, it may never
materialize.

Back over to net. >>>

N5VLZ:

Bob, bummer on the computer failures, and we
have a similar weather deal here in Arkansas...
forecast, then nothing.

I may have the next 4 out of order, so I
apologize in advance.

GE Carl, how was your week?? >>>

KX4AC:
GE all. I probably should be last, but as they
say, "the last shall be first". hi hi

I have been busy unpacking in Arizona. Got my
drivers license in the mail this week, but still
waiting on the permanent license plate for the
car.

I also went out today and got a library card,
so I think that makes me official.

I have been checking out a couple of ham clubs
in the area, had a Saturday breakfast with one
this last weekend. Seems like a nice group.

I managed to find and unpack my packet station,
so I now have that back up on the air. I have
amprnet connectivity to ns2b and w4mlb, but I
need to add some local links. I can hear at
least one packet station on the air and can see
its messages in debug, but so far no luck
connecting to it. I will need to reach out
online probably.

Anyway, it feels good to be back on the air
again.

I guess that's about all the news for
tonight. >>>

N5VLZ:

Carl, FB on getting settled in out in Arizona,
plus finding a ham club, and with packet
activities.

GE Rick...in talking to another ham in Canada,
he said it was -40C which is -40F, but not sure
if I heard that right or not...over to you >>>

VA7RBP:

Good evening Daryl and all on NET.

Yup, that sounds about right...

Well, I haven't been up to much the past 2 weeks,
just the usual PACTOR on 40M and 20M in the
mornings, and I have been playing with HF APRS
using VARA and PINPOINT on 30M and 40M while I
work on other projects.

I'm still mucking about with trying to learn 3D
printing, it's a steep learning curve.

Our WX has been cold, average during the day is
around 30F, but getting down to -04F at night.
We had our first substantial snowfall last Friday,
about 6 inches. It's snowing right now... wasn't
even forecast.

I missed the NET last week...was having a nap,
and slept right through it...

So, nothing really exciting to report, and that's
about it for me. BTU Daryl >>>

N5VLZ:

Rick, no worries on the sleep siesta. I have to
have a power nap in the afternoon myself. That
is too cold, and it sounds like you got "6 inches
of partly cloudy" (hi hi).

FB on the HF digital modes. I have the APRSDroid
app on my smartphone, so I might be railroad mobile
on my trips, if I can get the phone to work as a
hotspot.

GL on learning the 3D printing.

GE Glenn...how was your week?? >>>

N3MEL:

Hi everyone. It has been a while since I have
checked in. It has been 12 weeks since my double
knee replacement, but back to work full time, at
least for the next year or so.

Been busy with the packet forwarding network and
my EC work with our county ARES RACES group.

Thanks for your email last week Bob (NY), it was
nice to hear from you.

Daryl, I lost my father 3 weeks ago, it tough
losing the first parent! Good to see you all here
tonight.

So for now BTN >>>

N5VLZ:

Glenn, our condolences on the loss of your Dad...
been there, done that. FB on the knee replacement
surgery, back at work, plus the ham radio and EC
work.

GE Jay...sorry it took so long to get to you. How
was your week?? >>>

NT0Y:

Good evening to the net!

Up here in Lansing, Michigan, Friday we got rained
on all day until around 4pm, then it turned into a
blizzard! Strange Jan-Feb weather here.

Working on getting a packet group together in
Lansing. Currently consists of around 8 hams. Some
of us are running BPQ, others are running Kantronics
PBBS stations, others are running the DigiPi. We've
created a central node for exchanging messages, and
things actually seem to be running smooth.

For WFD, I was in charge of the digital station.
Made Qs on RTTY, VarAC, Winlink, and JS8 Call.

Speaking of Vara APRS, which VA7RBP mentioned, I was
just speaking with WA8LMF on the subject of 30M Vara
APRS, which I'm going to attempt on a trip into very
rural Ontario, Canada soon. Need to grab myself a 30m
hamstick and something to mount my X6200 on in the
Jeep.

Currently coming to you from SoundModem and EasyTerm
ran in the latest version of Wine on Fedora Linux.
Love experimenting with this stuff.

Thanks for having me. Back to net from NT0Y >>>

N5VLZ:

Jay, that is crazy on the weather!! FB on the packet
group.

In talking to a ham on the QCWA 6 meter net, he said
that "it was a pipeline from NY to TX on 10 meters",
and he made 6 dozen Q's.

Those hamsticks are nice antennas.

That's all for round 1. Back to the top for the 7 3
round.

Bob (NY), thanks for the BBS...anything else for
us?? >>>

NS2B:

Nothing more here - good to see everyone - stay warm
and 73 >>>

Thanks for being here, Bob...see you next week.

Eric, anything else?? >>>

WG3K:

That's all I've got for the evening. I have an early
tomorrow so I'm going cut on out. 73 all. >>>

Thanks for being here, Eric...see you next week.

Carl, did you have any luck with the scorpions??
Anything else?? >>>

KX4AC:

Oh, dear, scorpions! So far, the glue traps are
holding them at bay, but I scheduled a specialist
to come do a full-house sealing this Friday. They
block up all the holes, and hopefully keep the
little critters outside. We will see how it works.
The guy I wound up hiring seems knowledgeable. Keep
your fingers crossed for us.

In the meantime everyone stay safe and warm. 73 >>>

Carl, thanks for being here. GL with the scorpions.

Rick, anything else?? >>>

VA7RBP:

Jay, for HF APRS VARA, 7.0835 seems more active than
10.1482. Good luck!

That's all I have for this week. Everyone have a
great week, stay well, 73 until next time.

BTU Daryl >>>

N5VLZ:

Rick, thanks for being here.

Glenn, anything else for us?? >>>

N3MEL:

Not much more from SEPA, great to see you all here
using the packet system, for anyone interested in
Packet Backbone HF forwarding check Out TPRFN.net,
73 and GN! >>>

N5VLZ:

Glenn, I'll have to check my net schedule, but I
may have a net conflict. Thanks for being here.

Jay, anything else?? >>>

NT0Y:

Thanks for having me tonight! Rick, thanks for
the info, I'll be sure to check on that freq.

WA8LMF has a nearby 30M VARA APRS station, so
I'll perhaps bring both hamsticks.

Have a great week everyone. BTN, 73 >>>

N5VLZ:

Jay, thanks for being here.

Let me try Bob (MD), KB3KOW, one more time.
Anything else?? >>>

KB3KOW:

Howdy, nothing more for this week. 73 >>>

N5VLZ:

Bob (MD), thanks for being here.

That'll do it for tonight's PCL Net. I'll post
the scribe in the morning, as I have to prepare
for another net. Everyone stay safe, healthy,
weather aware, and radio-active, and GN DE
