N5VLZ:
The time change is this Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2am local
time. Don't forget to "fall back", or you will be an
hour early for church, work, school, doctor/medical
appointments, ham radio nets, etc. You will get an
extra hour of sleep that night, but will lose it again
when Daylight Savings Time returns on March 9, 2025.
The UTC time for most nets will be an hour later than
they are now, and most net local times will remain the
same. However, for nets operating on UTC Time, the local
checkin time will be an hour earlier as of Sunday. I wish
that they would decide on one time, and leave it.
It's hard to believe it's almost November...but at least
after next Tuesday (Election Day), I hope the political
mudslinging will be done...but, like in sports events,
the losers will throw a temper tantrum. Our next net
holidays are Nov. 25 for Thanksgiving, Dec. 23 for
Christmas, and Dec. 30 for New Years Day.
66 of Arkansas' 75 counties are under burn bans, with
extreme fire danger. But, it appears relief is on the
way (most areas haven't seen any rain in a month) with
a strong cold front that will bring widespread rain,
thunderstorms, and a threat of severe weather to the
region Wednesday through Thursday. I prefer that the
thunderstorms are on those days, as they are the ones
I don't have to run a ham radio net.
It'll cost me a good bit to get the bushes trimmed on
the north side of the property (plus the lawn mowing)
on Nov. 12, and hopefully, that will be the last needed
lawn mowing and yard care until spring, so I can save
some money. The split of funds with my sister-in-law
from my late brothers bank account allowed me to get
groceries last week (otherwise, I would've run out of
food). I've been eating lunch meat sandwiches on wheat
bread, topped with iceberg lettuce, carrots, purple
cabbage, French dressing, and various lunch meats,
including varieties of turkey and ham, so I'm being
cannibalistic (hi hi).
I went to a local square dance Saturday night, and wore
my train conductors outfit...doing the routine that the
late Mel Blanc did..."train leaving on track five for
Anaheim, Azuza, and Cucamonga". For a long time, folks
thought that those were made up cities, but they're actual
locations in California. There's a YouTube Video with Mel
Blanc and Jack Benny on the Tonight Show with Johnny
Carson, doing that...it's funny.
Then, I had to get a square dance publication finalized,
released, and posted to a website after doing the QCWA
Digital Net Sunday afternoon. I have 3 more net totals to
get for my report, but I'll have all that done by Tuesday
evening. I got an email from a gentleman, wanting an in
person ham radio license class in Arkansas, but the search
came up empty. I told him "unless you choose an online
deal, you may be waiting a long time". The local clubs
don't seem to want to do much of anything anymore...part
of the reason being that folks are so busy in their lives
outside of their hobbies.

NS2B:
Sounds like you had a busy week Daryl!
A boring week for me. I put some new light fixtures in on
Saturday.
One in the bathroom, one outside the garage. I think that
was the highlight of my week! (no pun intended!)
I'm getting to where I'm not a fan of the time changes -
I'd be just as happy if we stayed on standard time year
round.
This week I'm prepping to go sit on a bridge for Pumpkin
Patrol on Wednesday and Thursday. It makes for a boring
evening, but it's something to do.
And the racing season down at Watkins Glen is over - so
Saturday night we have our annual banquet - can't miss
that - it's food!

KE8QPX:
Hello again everyone.
This past week flew by again. I don't remember what all
I did. I must have had fun, but I don't remember that
either! Time just goes so fast. Today I tried some
things with APRS, putting a small transmitter at the
top of a 20 foot pole. Didn't work very well. As usual
the antenna itself seems to make the greatest difference
in performance. Weather has been pretty good here (MI)
and there still is some color around. Very nice to be
outside. 60's today, 50's now. Can't think of much else
of interest, so back to net. >>>

KX4AC:
GE All!
Daryl, I sure wish I could have seen you in your square
dance outfit. It sounds awesome!
The weather has been much better here the last couple
of weeks. Cooler and much less humid. I have been
enjoying some morning walks with my new TH-D75 and
even a few "foot mobile" QSOs.
This week is finally our local Hamfest, which was delayed
due to the hurricane. I am looking forward to that. I
always love looking over all the junk for sale. I don't
often buy anything, but enjoy looking.
I missed listening to last week's ISS talk. We should have
been able to hear it pretty good, about 40 degree elevation,
but one of the project managers called a last minute meeting
to put out the latest fire, so I was not able to get out to
the car to listen. Oh, well!

VA7RBP:
GE Daryl and all on the NET.
The week went by fast...again.
Snow is now showing on the local mountain tops, and my snow
tire installation is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.
I've been doing my usual PACTOR exchanges in the mornings on
40M and 20M, ROBUST PACKET on 20M, and OLIVIA 16/1K NET at
0300 UTC on 80M weeknights.
Did a bunch more reading...sci-fi / fantasy stuff.
I picked up some servos from amazon and tested them, for a
Halloween project, 3D printed, animatronic servo controlled
eyeballs, using an arduino.
Went to the med lab for my quarterly blood tests on Thursday,
waiting to hear results, they're just monitoring my blood
sugar...
This weekend, I had PC problems with my dual boot windoze /
ubuntu machine which decided it no longer wants to boot to
windoze. I was reading it's due to another windoze update,
but I have no idea how to fix it...

NT5R:
ge everyone
just back from Arizona trip, hiked 3 + miles down Grand
Canyon, not easy but not as difficult as expected. Grandson
supposed to go but he baled out last minute
Maybe return next year for more. Perfect day 70 degrees f,
two days later snow on ground
Weather dry nearly all way from MO to AZ. Actually slightly
more green in AZ
Moving MOBRA node to new location, better antenna and much
better feedline. Had problems with 147.195 repeater
interference, hopefully can overcome that with packet station
Hamfest Texoma Ardmore OK last Saturday. Not able to buy many
toys because Bank Of America network down most of day Friday,
unable to get any cash
Nixa MO hamfest will be November 9, going to be out of pocket
for that one. It is good hamfest, Branson club will have table
there
Speaking of in person exams, Kimberling City club in person
exams first Saturday. Can get more info if needed.
Branson club has Technician Bootcamp this weekend. More info
if needed
Daryl wonder if you could grow small garden, hard to beat
fresh out of garden
Will be digging sweet potatoes Wednesday. One $4 sweet potato
made about 35 slips and full plants from those slips
Before last trip and when return from next playing with VARAC.
Really interesting mode and developing more features regularly
Happy Halloween everyone

Replies from N5VLZ (as best as I can remember them):
To all, I sent a photo montage of me in the Conductors
outfit to Bob (NY), Carl, and Charley...if you want that,
please email me at n5vlz@arrl.net
Bob (NY), I was wondering if you'd use that pun (hi hi).
I agree on the time change deal, but there will be folks
who miss it. FB on the Pumpkin Patrol (hope nothing bad
occurs) end of Watkins Glen racing season, the new one
will be here before you know it.
Mike, FB on the fall colors, the APRS deal, and the
antenna...hope you can get that worked out.
Carl, FB on the weather, the upcoming hamfest, and sorry
you missed the ISS deal.
Rick, FB on the snow tires, digital modes, reading, and
the arduinos for Halloween projects. On the blood sugar
deal, I may have to worry about that when I see my PCP
on Nov. 14...for the rescheduled appointment (they had
deleted it, or had never entered it). Bummer on the dual
boot computer barfing. Every time Microsoft does an update
with Windows, something else gets mucked up.
Charley, I was never much of a fan of gardening...I do my
gardening at Kroger (hi hi). FB on the Grand Canyon trip,
the VARAC mode, and on the moving of the MOBRA system...
hope that fixes the issues. Bummer on not having the money
for the toys, and the ATM networks seem to be having more
and more problems lately. Arkansas' hamfest season is done
until February...the last one in Little Rock was 8 years
ago. That Technician Bootcamp sounds interesting.
